Free Food is not FREE

I was invited to join two friends today at an event. I ate my lunch before joining them and when I arrived I found out that food was being offered: small sandwiches and chocolate covered cheesecake lollipops. A half hour earlier I had eaten my lunch. I did not need to have the sandwiches. Hmmm, dessert would have been nice but I do not eat milk-fat so I do not eat cheesecake but it did look interesting. Hmmm.

There was a time in my journey when I would have declined the cheesecake but resented that I could not have it. That resentment would have led me to eat the sandwiches or to act out by eating extra foods later in the day - lamenting the cheesecake I missed.

There was a time in my life when I would have eaten just a bite of the cheesecake at the event but I am sure that by the end of the day or perhaps the next day, I would have bought lots of creamy sweet foods to 'make up for the part I did not eat.

I am beyond grateful to be on a better path today. Today I do not pick up foods that lead me to out-of-control eating. I do not eat two lunches. I do not today resent the way I have to live my life with regards to food because I know it is so much better than where I have been and it is the only way I can continue, one day at a time, to keep the pounds off.

amen to every word of that. I come to see more every day that we (weight loss/maintenance blog land we) are all very much alike. There are some who proclaim very loudly that we are all very different. What we react TO might be different, but the fact that we react and we have to deal within our own realities is very much the same. And that is what I see. Good post.
