SURPRISE!!!

Earlier this evening I arrived home and was greeted by a chorus of SURPRISE as my husband, both of our daughters and my nearest/dearest friends shocked me with a surprise fiftieth birthday party. I do not know what was the bigger surprise: (a) that they all kept this secret so well, (b) that they all fit into my house or (c) that I didn't run into the bathroom to dye my hair, put on make-up and change my clothes!

The party was wonderful. The special man I married spent the day cleaning the house, washing all the floors and shining up the kitchen. My younger daughter (the baby is 23) helped my husband plan the food and decorated the house (on a budget) with style and taste,  My older daughter (this baby is an ancient 26) kept me out of the house all day and never let on when (several times) I wanted to get home. Each time she found something that would keep me away from the house without acting like she was seeking to divert me a bit longer. The people present were the perfect mix of love and friendship. What a great way to celebrate a big, milestone birthday.

There was no birthday cake, no greasy chips, no gratuitous candy. The buffet was set with a huge cobb salad (bleu cheese on the side), sushi platter, peeled shrimp, sliced fresh vegetables, rolled slices of ham, turkey, roast beef, hot entree of chicken in spinach, artichokes, tomatoes, garlic and oil. There was a platter of fresh cut fruits, unsweetened tea, coffee, and bottled water. One thoughtful guest baked and brought his own homemade pastry for the few 'normal' people at the party who might have wanted a more traditional dessert.

It was a wonderful evening with people who celebrating my upcoming fiftieth birthday without gag- aging gifts or mournful reminders of impending senility. It was just what I would have said I wanted if I had been asked. No, if I had been asked I would have wanted to direct, design, control . . . . it was perfect because I was completely out of the theater until it was time for my stage call.

A beautiful day keeping the pounds off at my own birthday party!

happy birthday to you! I just recently realized we are the same age (I turned 50 in March). We are on two different sides of the cut off (here) so we would not have been in the same class, but close enough.

I am copying and pasting their food list as it is an excellent one. Still very party like without the whites/processed and without too many calories.

Isn't it wonderful! I had the same thing happen to me at my 50th back in July. My daughters kept me out of the house and we returned to a driveway full of people. It was so nice just to relax and not do anything.
Happy 50th Birthday!
